The Makoko Foundation was founded by the Dutch independent consultancy agency By Nature which specializes in natural resource management, ecology, and climate adaption. By Nature has been operating in Nsanje, Malawi since 2013 at the WATERS-project, an initiative of Volunteer Services Overseas (VSO) and the Scottish Government.
The focus of the WATERS project is to support and train community members in the four most vulnerable districts of Malawi, Nsanje, Chikwawa, Salima and Karonga. These trainings provide instruction on the benefits of conserving and utilizing the natural landscape in order to decrease the negative effects climate change. This is accomplished through by capacity building, supporting effective management plans, and instituting projects including reforestation, agroforestry, sustainable riverbank management, conservation agriculture, alternative livelihood, and alternative/sustinable energy sources.
